Edward has joined MPs from all Parties at Kidney Research UK's parliamentary event to help draw attention to kidney disease, and the need for improvements to kidney disease prevention, to speed up diagnosis, and to increase access to more effective treatments.
As well as bringing MPs together with campaigners, the event heard from clinicians and patients, including 15 year old Charlie who movingly and powerfully shared his story of childhood kidney disease, the impact it and over 7,500 hours on essential dialysis treatment had on him, and his recent life-changing liver transplant. In our own county of Leicestershire, Kidney Research UK estimates that over 85,000 people are living with chronic kidney disease, and 369 people are currently receiving dialysis treatment.
Edward said: "Hearing directly from Charlie, and campaigners like Angela, really brings home the very real human impact of kidney disease, with events like this highlighting the need for continued focus and action to further improve outcomes for people with kidney disease, here in Leicestershire, and across the country. Campaigners highlighted the importance of earlier diagnosis of the disease, but also of improved support and access to vital treatments for everyone with kidney disease."
