Ahead of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Awareness Week which takes place between 28th April and 4th May this year, Edward has met with the team from the MS Society at an event in Parliament to learn about issues facing the MS community, and to learn more about the disease.
The event saw MPs from across the political spectrum meet with people affected by MS. Around 150,000 people live with MS in the UK, including over 10,500 estimated to live in the East Midlands. The condition affects the brain and spinal chord, impacting how people move, think, and feel. Symptoms are different for everybody and are often invisible, but once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, and over time your symptoms can get worse. At the event Edward talked to people with MS about the challenges they face, including support in work, and access to the support they need, as well as being able to access the treatment and care they need in the NHS.
Edward said: "It was great to hear first-hand from people with MS more about the disease, but crucially more about the support they need, and how improvements can be made to enable them to access more easily healthcare and treatments. I'm proud to join the MS Society in speaking up for the MS community, and I look forward to continuing to meet and work with the charity in the years ahead."
