Leicestershire and Rutland Conservative MPs, and senior Councillors have met in Thurnby, one of the affected communities, a day after the Government's devastating announcement of its decision to back a Leicester city land-grab of rural and county communities as part of its Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) to reaffirm their total opposition to the Government's plan and determination to do anything they can to continue to oppose it and fight this dreadful decision by a Labour Government completely out of touch with our county.
Despite strong opposition from local MPs from the start, since LGR was first announced, in early 2025, local Councillors, and from residents, to a city 'land-grab' expanding the city to absorb communities currently in the county, like Syston, Queniborough, Thurmaston, Barkby, Barkby Thorpe, Beeby, and Thorpebury in the Melton and Syston constituency, the Government on 16th July showed contempt for local views, and agreed to the 'land-grab'.
Edward said: "Although the Government has said this is its final decision & it has the majority in the House of Commons to push it through, that doesn't make it right. Like my fellow MPs, local Councillors, and residents, I have fought this so far, and I will keep fighting it, doing anything I can to try to stop it. As local Conservative MPs and senior Councillors we met to reaffirm our strong opposition to the city 'land-grab' and our commitment to standing with our residents in the areas that would be affected to keep up the campaign and fight against this dreadful decision by the Government."
